Buying art at brg*
*and why it’s easier than you might think
Since the mid-1960s, Baton Rouge Gallery – center for contemporary art (“BRG”) has been proud to be among the go-to venues for original art in Louisiana’s capital city. We believe in supporting living artists and giving them the opportunity to connect with collectors, businesses, and those who might be buying art for the first time. Doing so makes it possible for artists to call our area home and evidence shows artists make any city a better, more vibrant place for everyone. BRG views it as part of its mission to work with both artists and those who value their work to make the process of adding pieces to a home or collection as enjoyable and hassle-free as possible.
Six Reasons to BUY BRG
1. artworks AVAILABLE from an evolving lineup of artists
The roster of artists at BRG continues to grow and evolve each year. What started as the brainchild of eight artists in search of a venue to share their work has grown to include 70 artist members exploring countless subjects and employing a wide array of media. While overwhelmingly located in the Greater Baton Rouge area, our artist membership also includes artists from elsewhere in the state and throughout our region (as well as a small few who have relocated but maintain ties to our community).

3. Enjoy reduced sales tax as part of Louisiana’s Cultural Districts Program
BRG is proud to be a part of The Perkins Road Arts District, as part of The Louisiana Cultural Districts Program. This initiative of the state’s Office of Cultural Development aims to spark community revitalization based on cultural activity through tax incentives, technical assistance, and resources. As a member of a cultural district, all purchases of original art at BRG are exempt from local sales tax, meaning you will only be charged 4.45% sales tax instead of the standard 10% you might encounter elsewhere. This program is a valuable tool for economic growth and creative placemaking, having helped build support for artists and the cultural economy of our state since 2008.

It has always been a place dedicated to supporting artists as well as serving visitors and collectors. Did you know that when a work of art sells at BRG, the artist gets a higher percentage of the sale than they would at most commercial galleries? Plus, every dollar BRG makes from the purchase is immediately reinvested in the presentation of quality exhibitions and cultural programming that is open to everyone, nearly always free of charge. Thus, your purchase at BRG doesn’t just support one artist, but an entire community!
