SEVENTEENTH SURREAL SALON COMING JANUARY 2025

Surreal Salon - the annual international exhibition celebrating the pop-surrealist/lowbrow movement - returns to Baton Rouge Gallery (“BRG”) for its 17th year in January! The exhibition, held in partnership with the LSU School of Art, will feature the work of artists from across the globe, each hand-picked by the show’s Special Guest Juror, Evan Pricco (Editor-in-Chief for Juxtapoz), via a blind jurying process.

For more than a decade, Surreal Salon has featured paintings, photography, ceramics, textiles, mixed media works, and more. Now, BRG is excited to introduce you to a fresh collection of works in 2025 spanning a wide array of media from artists across the U.S. and beyond.

More than $2,000 in cash prizes will be awarded in conjunction with the exhibition and the artist whose work is selected as Best in Show is also be profiled in an online editorial by Juxtapoz.

Supported by a grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Department of  Culture, Recreation and Tourism, in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council, as administered by the  RAC. Funding has also been provided by the National Endowment of the Arts.

SURREAL SALON 17 SPECIAL GUEST JUROR: EVAN PRICCO

Surreal Salon 17 Special Guest Juror Evan Pricco

Over the years, Surreal Salon has had the privilege of enlisting the eyes of well-known and respected artists and individuals to curate the works featured in each iteration of Surreal Salon. Previous jurors have included Greg Escalante (co-founder of Juxtapoz), Andrew Hosner (Thinkspace), and internationally-renowned artists such as Ron English, Camille Rose Garcia, Beth Cavener, Elizabeth McGrath, Dan Quintana, Carrie Ann Baade, Marco Mazzoni, and Greg “Craola” Simkins. That tradition continued with the exhibition’s 17th year as Juxtapoz Magazine Editor-in-Chief Evan Pricco steps into the role (thanks in part to a partnership with the Louisiana State University School of Art).

Pricco has been the Editor of the world’s leading international contemporary art magazine, Juxtapoz, based in San Francisco, California, since 2006. In 2017, he curated Juxtapoz x Superflat with Takashi Murakami at the Vancouver Art Gallery Museum. He has edited over 17 books for Juxtapoz and hosts the Radio Juxtapoz podcast while continuing to curate exhibitions around the world. He has been a co-curator on the international travelling exhibitions, BEYOND THE STREETS, which serves as an overview of both historic and contemporary moments in the graffiti and street art genres, with the most recent showcases in London and Shanghai in 2023 featuring his curatorial work. In Los Angeles in 2024, he produced and co-curated the works on paper exhibition, "I'd Love To See You", a celebration and survey of Juxtapoz Magazine during its 30th anniversary.
