An Evening with Dylan Krieger

The Acclaimed Poet's Only Baton Rouge Reading from Her Latest Book, 'Dreamland Trash'

You're invited to join us for a special night of poetry as Baton Rouge Gallery welcomes accomplished writer Dylan Krieger for an intimate reading from her latest book, Dreamland Trash, released just this month through Saint Julian Press. This event may contain adult themes and is intended for adults. Parental discretion is advised.

Last August, The New York Times said Krieger's debut book, Giving Godhead, was "easily among the most inventive and successfully performative works to appear in living memory" and "the best collection of poetry to appear in English in 2017."

With Dreamland Trash, Krieger turns her focus to "the stigmatized and/or criminalized margins of American society" including drugs, queer culture, conspiracy theories, mental illness, and the anxieties that accompany our conscious complicity in impending self-extinction." The 66-page collection, according to Krieger, "ultimately presents a fractured post-apocalyptic vision of American culture that prioritizes substances and resources over human ties and still willfully and woefully denies the inevitable consequences of climate change even under the ominous skies of an increasingly shadowy military-industrial complex."

Author Sandra Simonds says in praise of the new book, "We are just as likely to wake up next to a moaning unicorn as we are to be abducted by deranged YouTube automatic captions. It’s in this derangement that we begin to see the late- capitalist world inside out and upside down, for its cheap thrills and absolute devaluation of the self."

Krieger originally hails from South Bend, Indiana, where she was home schooled for religious reasons until her, as she puts it, "inevitable (and ironic) corruption at the University of Notre Dame." Since then, she has earned her MFA in creative writing from Louisiana State University and now sunlights as a trade magazine editor here in Baton Rouge.

As mentioned, this event is intended for an adult audience and the suggested donation for those planning to attend is just $10 (includes drinks). You can reserve your spot for this special event now, though this is not required.
