Sundays@4 - Performance & Talk with Dr. Taylor Scott
On Sunday, November 24th, Baton Rouge Gallery’s Sundays@4 series is delighted to host a presentation and discussion by Taylor C. Scott. As with all Sundays@4 experiences, this will be free and open to the public.
Taylor C. Scott recently served as the 2023-2024 Poet Laureate for East Baton Rouge Parish. She is also an Assistant Professor of English at Southern University where she teaches African American Literature. In 2022, she graduated from Louisiana State University with her doctorate in English. In this performance and artist talk, Dr. Scott will be giving an introduction of her work and why it matters. Dr. Scott not only writes about the blues in her scholarship, but she is also a performer and self-proclaimed blues woman. She will be joined by longtime collaborator and saxophone player, Nathan France, to perform songs from their latest project, Heaven Inside, which premiered this past April at the Overture Center for the Arts in Wisconsin. Heaven Inside is an original musical production written and performed by the Madison-based band Tilla, which both Taylor and Nathan co-founded. With poetic scenes, bluesy vocals, and a robust musical score, this 50-minute show is carefully curated to speak to the current moment. Tilla’s poignant lyricism encompasses themes of black identity and diaspora, existentialism, interpersonal relationships, and spirituality. Each song creates a distinct world and encourages listeners to reflect upon the interconnectedness of the human experience.
