Surreal Salon 11 Juror and Pop-Surrealist Icon to Speak at LSU

Baton Rouge Gallery is honored to have, thanks to a partnership with the LSU School of Art, one of pop-surrealism’s top artists, Camille Rose Garcia, serving as the Special Guest Juror for 2019's Surreal Salon 11.

Garcia, the child of a Mexican activist filmmaker father and a muralist/painter mother, has become one of the pop-surrealist movement’s most well-known painters. Her layered, broken narratives of wasteland fairy tales act as commentaries that blend pop culture references with a satirical slant on modern society. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums internationally and in publications such as Juxtapoz and Rolling Stone.

“There are few artists with the influence over the past 25 years of pop-surrealism and lowbrow art cultures quite like Camille Rose Garcia,” explained Juxtapoz in February 2018. “To call her royalty is almost an understatement: she is not only one of the most famed female painters of her generation, but she practically invented a style of folkloric, narrative-based, cartoon-goth painting that we see so much today around the world.”

Garcia will give a free and informal talk at the LSU School of Art on Monday, January 28, 2019 in conjunction with Surreal Salon 11. Her presentation will touch on her own work, her more than three decades as a professional artist, the state of pop-surrealism today, as well as the collection of works featured in Surreal Salon 11.

This lecture is open to the public and is free to attend.
