Dive into the story of three generations of Cuban Women plus a performance from world-renowned violinist Yilian Cañizares

We are honored to host, in partnership with The Palacios’ House of Arts, the U.S. premiere of the documentary Madre Habana on Wednesday, March 18 (6:30PM). Prior to the screening, attendees will enjoy a live performance from world-renowned violinist (and center of the film’s story) Yilian Cañizares. A limited number of tickets ($5) are available for this special event, so scroll down and get yours now!

The film, from Swiss director Emmanuelle de Riedmatten, follows the intertwined trajectories of three Cuban women, coming from the same family: Gloria (93), anchored in Havana; her daughter Glorita (64), settled in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and Yilian (38), settled in Switzerland.

The film is built around Yilian Cañizares, her destiny as a little girl passionate about violin, whose life changes after obtaining two scholarships that lead her to Venezuela as a teenager, then to Switzerland as an adult, causing painful family separations, but nourishing an urgent need for professional progress.

All those who have marveled at her fiery blend of jazz, classical and Afro-Cuban rhythms, who’ve got goosebumps from her otherworldly voice, will testify to feeling transformed. Whether onstage or on record there are few artists as impressively talented as this Havana-born, Swiss-based thirtysomething with a respect for the past and a feel for the future - oh, and a smile to die for.
