Memory has always played a significant role in Christopher Brumfield’s work. Most recently, his work has focused on dislocation, having his own notions about permanence altered over the past decade. His earliest sculptures sought to give physicality to childhood memories, which over time evolved into separate current focuses.

“Blues in der Nacht is about people and their relationship to language, objects, and the inner signifiers we attach to words and objects. Philosophy often wonders where the words are before we say them, I wonder where the sculptures are before I make them, because often I recognize them when they come out.  My sculptures are like phrases or thoughts or ideas that I struggle with.  In my sculpture currently I am making objects out of clay, finding objects in the material world, transforming their surfaces, and combining the two.” - Brumfield, on this new body of work.

Since 2014, Brumfield has served on the faculty at Baton Rouge Community College. His work has been exhibited throughout the southeast United States.

This exhibition is presented alongside the latest works from Katrina Andry, Kelli Scott Kelley, and Katherine Scherer. All works from these four artists are on view, free of charge, during normal gallery hours (12 - 6 p.m., Tue - Sun) through February 27, 2020.
