“Paths of Moving Points is the title I chose ten years ago when this series of drawings started because it is the textbook definition of this key element of art and these drawings rely heavily on that element. Line is the only manmade element of art. The others: shape, texture, color, and value are all elements that exist in nature. Line can be used to visually create a shape, suggest texture and simulate value. Color is arbitrary; the artist choses this rogue element.”

Carpenter’s drawings are often compared to tapestries or weavings. Some have even described them as “map-like” because of the curving lines which give a cartographic quality. His process is slow, and deliberate. Each drawing consists of many layers of lines in varying widths, colors, and qualities. As the drawings build up in layers that may approach as many as ten or more in the final drawing, is the emergence of shapes that can be developed as compositional elements.

This exhibition is presented alongside the latest works from David Horton, Heather Ryan Kelley & Kristine Thompson. All works from these artists are on view, free of charge, during normal gallery hours (12 - 6 p.m., Tue - Sun) from May 4th through the 27th.
