Malaika Favorite works in a variety of different media, allowing her flexibility based on the nature and purpose of the work. In recent years, Favorite has experimented with an assortment of surface treatments and forms to create eye-catching two-dimensional works that move beyond the typical square or rectangular frame of a single piece. Within a single series, she may employ canvas, wood, metal, and more to create an elaborate assortment of shapes.
Veiled is a show about hidden and partially revealed realities. Family, and friends, never tell the whole story. Usually, we get a small portion of the secrets in their lives, we seldom see the true picture. People who are wounded and hurting don’t reveal their pain to their closest friends or family members. There is a fear that if the truth is known it will embarrass the people we love. We suffer alone and hide behind our veiled smiles, our secret knowledge, our feared truths. Afterall, some truths are best kept in secret drawers, to be destroyed after death.
Veiled is about our lives, our earth, and what we think we know about life. When the truth finally comes out, we are caught off guard, and it might be too late to repair or save what was so precious to us. In this series I explore these two realities, what we think we know and what must be revealed if we are to heal ourselves, our planet, and our community.
Favorite’s artwork has been featured in Samella Lewis’ “African American Art and Artist” and “Art: African American;” Bernardine B. Proctor’s “Black Art in Louisiana,” and “The St. James Guide to Black Artists,” by Thomas Riggs. Her works can be found in a number of notable collections including that of Absolut Vodka, The Morris Museum of Art (Augusta, GA), The Alexandria Museum of Art (Alexandria, LA), The Coca Cola Company (Atlanta, GA), and The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center (Cincinnati, OH).
This exhibition is presented alongside the latest works from Jamie Baldridge, Frankie Gould, and April Hammock. All works from these artists are on view, free of charge, during regular gallery hours (12 - 6 p.m., Tue - Sun) from Nov 14 - Dec 22, 2023.
