David Horton’s paintings are packed full of symbols, figures, and elements that read much like European pre-renaissance artwork. They flex perspective and structure for the service of the narrative that each holds. He is very interested in telling a story with each composition but less interested in articulating that narrative. He’d prefer that viewers begin to translate the works as they become familiar with the art and bring their own backgrounds to the experience.
“In 1990 I had the wonderful opportunity to have a studio in a small town just south of Barcelona on the Costa Blanca. My experience there was such that I began to see the world of light and color in ways hidden from me until then. Even my studio time in Provence didn’t affect me as much. In addition the ancient culture of rural Spain, still steeped in symbolism and myth, began to influence my new imagery. Since 1982 I had been strongly influenced by the social culture of Paris after acquiring a studio there for a couple of summers.
My creative world became one of experimentation and discovery after my time in Spain and by 1992 a full-fledged style had evolved in imagery, color palette, and materials. It has served me wonderfully for the past 30 years.” - Horton
