BR Premiere of 'Bending Lines'

  • Baton Rouge Gallery 1515 Dalrymple Drive Baton Rouge, LA, 70808 United States (map)

On Thursday, October 11, BRG will proudly host the Baton Rouge premiere of the new documentary, Bending Lines, which focuses on sculptor Robert Wiggs, followed by an informal Q&A with filmmakers, Allison Bohl DeHart and Peter DeHart.

Wiggs, among many other notable achievements, was one of BRG's founding artists in the mid 1960s.

We invite you to get your tickets ($7) in advance, as only a limited number of tickets will be made available.

Louisiana filmmakers Allison Bohl DeHart and Peter DeHart explore intimacy and legacy in the aging subject of sculptor Robert Wiggs. Nearing the end of his life, Wiggs looks back on a lifelong obsession with patterns. Never formally trained in mathematics, Wiggs studied mud cracks, beehives, and tree bark to create a geometric system that rivals the work of academic mathematicians, a system which he expressed and explored in scores of sculptures.

Artist Robert Wiggs

"In 2012, while in a museum gallery viewing the retrospective of sculptor, Robert (Bob) Wiggs, we both kept turning to each other and saying, 'I don’t know if I quite get it, but it's fascinating,'" explains the films directors. "We didn’t know it in that moment, but a couple of months later we would be head first into capturing Bob’s radical thought process and a lifetime of work that bent the lines between art and science."

An Award of Merit winner at the 2018 Impact Doc Awards, Bending Lines is a story of obsession, of vision, and of the enduring conversation between art and science. It uncovers an amateur mathematician, obscured by time and his profession, whose work communicates the universal quest to discover the essence of the natural world.
