Celebrate the opening of And We Went: 60 Years After the Baton Rouge Swim-In with many of the exhibition’s featured artists, live music from The Michael Foster Project, complimentary beverages, remarks from exhibition curator Jonell Logan, and a keynote address from four-time Olympic medalist swimmer Cullen Jones.
The result of a multi-year partnership between Baton Rouge Gallery – center for contemporary art, Dialogue on Race Louisiana, and BREC, this exhibition is an historic presentation of contemporary art and programming to mark the 60th anniversary of the Baton Rouge Swim-In, essentially held in the very space where the demonstration took place.
It features roughly a dozen artists from Louisiana and across the nation that speak to issues of inequity, recreation, activism, and more. In addition to the paintings, textiles, prints, and mixed media works featured in the exhibition, visitors will also encounter historically relevant images of the City Park Pool, Brooks Pool (which was created as a direct response to the segregationist policies of the times), and others.
As always, First Wednesdays at BRG are free for everyone and open to all.
