Movies & Music on the Lawn: 'Hundreds of Beavers'

  • Baton Rouge Gallery 1515 Dalrymple Drive BATON ROUGE United States (map)

Movies & Music on the Lawn closes out its 2024-25 season on Saturday, May 24 with one of the strangest, wildest, (and furriest) slapstick comedies ever made. You’re invited for a special screening of the new cult classic, Hundreds of Beavers (2022) presented with an original score from Baton Rouge’s own Breadstick Space Opera! And, in a first for Movies & Music on the Lawn, the night will also feature live foley effects from Clay Achee & Michael Russo.

Thanks to the support of our sponsors, Movies & Music on the Lawn events are open to everyone at absolutely no cost. And did we mention free, bottomless popcorn??

Since 1998, the series has been a cultural staple in Baton Rouge, bringing contemporary Louisiana-based musicians to compose and perform original scores for silent films while they’re projected on a towering inflatable screen inside BREC’s City-Brooks Community Park.

About Hundreds of Beavers (2022): Quickly achieving cult-classic status, this film from director Mike Cheslik is set in a 19th century winter and follows an applejack salesman who finds himself up against an army of beavers after losing everything in a freak snowstorm. With no weapons or supplies, he's forced to rely on sheer cunning (and pure luck) to outsmart the beavers - all played by actors in full-sized mascot costumes – and survive in the wilderness. What follows is a madcap, slapstick battle of man versus nature, filled with zany antics and unexpected twists.

“Although clearly inspired by the black-and-white, silent slapstick comedies of the 1920s and ‘30s, this will also delight fans of Looney Tunes cartoons, Caddyshack, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Monty Python’s Flying Circus and stop-motion animation.” - James Croot for The Post

About The Breadstick Space Opera: The Breadstick Space Opera is a band built on the fusion of sounds from earth and elsewhere, based here in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. They have shared the stage and opened for musicians such as George Porter Jr. and The Honey Island Swamp Band. Now the four-piece that leans as heavily into funk, rock and jazz as they do something only heard out there beyond the stars is landing in City-Brooks Park to take on Hundreds of Beavers.

Live Foley Effects: For more than 25 years, Movies & Music on the Lawn has been powered by the sounds of local musicians. Now, for the first time, those sounds will be supplemented by the work of live foley artists too! Foley artists reproduce sound effects that are added to films in post-production and can include anything from the swishing of clothing and footsteps to squeaky doors and breaking glass. For this special screening of Hundreds of Beavers, two experienced foley artists (Clay Achee & Michael Russo) will be working alongside Breadstick Space Opera to make sure no fall, no kick, or buck-toothed chomp is missed. This will be a new one-time addition to Movies & Music on the Lawn you won’t want to miss!
