Malaika Favorite works in a variety of different media, allowing her flexibility based on the nature and purpose of the work. In recent years, Favorite has experimented with an assortment of surface treatments and forms to create eye-catching two-dimensional works that move beyond the typical square or rectangular frame of a single piece. Within a single series, she may employ canvas, wood, metal, and more to create an elaborate assortment of shapes.

The title of this series is inspired by the painting by Paul Gauguin, Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going? In this series Malaika Favorite discusses ancestors as well as who we are now and what it means to be who we are and where we come from. “It is my desire that these works will inspire each viewer and encourage them to examine how they view and relate to the people they encounter in their daily lives.”

The artist wishes to acknowledge to the Puffin Foundation LTD, Teaneck, NJ for funding this show. Additional thanks to Louisiana Division of the Arts for an Artist Professional Development Mini Grant also funding this project.

Malaika Favorite has been an Artist Member of Baton Rouge Gallery since 2015. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Art and her Master of Fine Art from Louisiana State University.

This exhibition is presented alongside the latest works from Frankie Gould, April Hammock, & Isoko Onodera. All works from these four artists are on view, free of charge during normal gallery hours (12 - 6 p.m., Tue - Sun), through December 27, 2019.
