Steve Schmidt's newest exhibition at BRG, “Catalyst,” sees the artist continue to find inspiration in "the make." Working intuitively, he finds the expression emerges and informs his next movement or action. At times, Schmidt will physically rotate his paintings for new viewpoints to composition, scale, and color.

He would rather field questions of "Why does he do this?" than "What is it?"

Steve Schmidt, “Deletion, Deletion, Deletion,” oil on canvas, 44 x 38 in, 2019

A native of Baton Rouge, Schmidt received his Master of Fine Arts from Louisiana State University in 1991. Before retiring from teaching in 2013, he spent time as an art instructor with the East Baton Rouge Parish Talented Art Program and Baton Rouge Community College, teaching painting, figure drawing, and art appreciation. He has twice attended The Atlantic Center for the Arts to work alongside David Salle and Gregory Amenoff, who have both influenced him greatly.

He has been an artist member at BRG since 1991.

This exhibition is presented alongside the latest works from Judi Betts, James Burke, and Hye Yeon Nam. All works from these four artists are on view, free of charge, during normal gallery hours (12 - 6 p.m., Tue - Sun) through May 30, 2019.
