Ross Jahnke's work focuses on printmaking, particularly woodcut prints and silkscreen prints. What unifies all the works is his conceptual approach to the figure and woodgrain as a tool to invigorate and delineate space. He is interested in the figure, especially portraiture, but he is in love with the processes of image making that print techniques involve. The people and objects in his work become the framework to hang the process on. They are important, but not always the sole focus of his studio practice.
“If a painting is like a symphony orchestra, then a print is like a string quartet. The music is no less complex or compelling but it is made with more limited means and demands more from each of its component parts. I relish the challenge of printmaking where the visual and conceptual vocabulary is dictated by the process, and I need to problem-solve steps ahead to achieve an outcome.”
“The artist Karel van Mander said, ‘There are two perfect manners for a painter, the rough and the smooth’. These prints apply the rough style to both the woodcut and the application of color. The small woodcuts are prints are similar or the same images, but are more spare and intimate. Making this work felt refreshing after two very difficult years.” - Jahnke
