Isoko Onodera’s work is the imagery of the symbolic, metaphysical narrative of human nature. By painting figures as motifs, she examines what lies in the core of human beings.

Her work is also motivated by her contemplation on the similarity between a person’s life and the process of painting. She finds an interesting parallel between how humans are formed throughout their lifetime and how her paintings are created: they are composed of multiple layers and each layer is an important and significant part of the whole.

I just painted.
I did not “examine,” or “address,” or “explore” anything. Instead, I focused on the process of painting itself. I quieted my mind and simply interacted with the image in front of me. Not the result, but the act was the purpose.
I painted to paint.
Ovarian Cancer Awareness
I would like to dedicate this show to all the ovarian cancer patients and survivors out there, and also take this opportunity to raise awareness of the disease.
I was one of the 21,410 women diagnosed with it in the U.S. in 2021. Ovarian cancer gained the nickname “the silent killer” because patients usually do not become aware of the symptoms until it had advanced to stage III or IV, and there is no screening test to detect it early. Since it’s not a well-known disease, although 1 in 78 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer in their lifetime, the research organizations need more funding.
I intend to donate 100% of the personal sales profit from this show to Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance.

All works from these artists are on view, free of charge, during normal gallery hours (12 - 6 p.m., Tue - Sun) from November 22 - December 22, 2022.
