Baton Rouge Gallery – center for contemporary art’s (“BRG”) Movies & Music on the Lawn series has announced its 2023-24 season, which will begin with, for the first time ever, a free and open to all event on September 23, 2023 with The Michael Foster Project playing alongside the Oscar-winning film, “The Artist.”
Since 1998, the series has been a summer staple in Baton Rouge, bringing contemporary Louisiana-based musicians to compose and perform original scores for silent-era classic films while they’re projected on a towering inflatable screen under the stars. This year the series transitions to begin in September, with additional events taking place in October, March, and April inside BREC’s City-Brooks Community Park.
Thanks to the support of Cox Communications, this year’s kickoff event on September 23 will present a first for the series. Admission for Movies & Music on the Lawn has historically been ticketed. In September, the series will open its arms and welcome everyone to the lawn, removing the cost barrier, and allowing all residents of Baton Rouge to enjoy the exceptional talents of local musicians during these unique one-night-only events.
“When we learned our partners at BRG were connecting families to moments that matter through Movies & Music on the Lawn this fall, we raised our hands to help," said Erin Monroe, market vice president for Cox Greater Louisiana. “This series connects the community to education and entertainment and brings great value to our area’s quality of life."

About The Artist (2011): This love letter to the silver screen’s silent era received ten nominations, winning five awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor in a Leading Role. Set in the 1920s, it follows actor George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) who is a bona fide matinee idol with many adoring fans. While working on his latest film, George finds himself falling in love with an ingenue named Peppy Miller (Bérénice Bejo) and, what's more, it seems Peppy feels the same way. But George is reluctant to cheat on his wife with the beautiful young actress. The growing popularity of sound in movies further separates the potential lovers, as George's career begins to fade while Peppy's star rises.
