The artistic work of Mary Lee Eggart often focuses specifically on avian wildlife and other natural forms. This has been a love of hers since childhood. She has always found herself drawing pictures of nature and the animals within it. She has an affinity with late medieval artists who portrayed accurate, carefully observed animals while simultaneously expressing a spiritual message with them.
Eggart works in the drawing media, specializing in colored pencil and watercolor designs based on birds and other natural forms.
She retired in 2011 from the LSU Department of Geography and Anthropology where she worked for over 30 years as a Research Associate in cartographic design and scientific illustration and as an instructor in cartographic design. She continues to work as a consulting cartographic designer.
“Eucharistic Adoration is a form of contemplative prayer in the Catholic Church in which the consecrated communion host is placed in a vessel (a “monstrance”) as a focus for meditation. The faithful experience unity with the living presence of Christ and strive to be a conduit of His love, light, hope, and grace to the world.
My artwork is inspired by the beauty of creation and I often visualize images of nature during meditation. Like the medieval artists who found God in nature, I use these images as metaphors to express the insights to which meditation leads. The composition of each drawing reflects the form of the monstrance–a round object held aloft for contemplation.” Eggart
