Artist: Katherine Scherer

Photographer Katherine Scherer strives to create a visual narrative that is personal and compelling and that successfully communicates her interpretation of the environment in which she has experienced.

Scherer's work has been exhibited at the Naomi Silva Gallery in Atlanta, the Contemporary Art Center in New Orleans, Brunner Gallery at the Shaw Center for the Arts in Baton Rouge and the Louisiana State Archives.

Photography has always been my means of expression, my way to share my interpretation of the world I observe. Seeking to capture people and places with an empathetic eye, my documentarian approach is influenced by the pictorial movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries... in other words, my photography seeks to convey both realism and wonder.

Through the lens of cultural traditions, history, and place, I present characters, experiences, and locales in ways that I hope will inspire curiosity and appreciation and represent compelling interpretations of fleeting moments in time.

Día de los Muertos

This exhibition is my collection of photographs from San Miguel de Allende, Mexico during Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebrations in October/November 2023.

Drawn to the symbolic significance and colorful pageantry of Mexico’s centuries old Día de los Muertos rituals, I wanted to explore the customs and traditions around this sacred observance and festive celebration.

Rather than mournful, the Día de los Muertos is a day for Mexicans to honor loved ones who have passed in vibrant and life-affirming ways. Dutiful graveside vigils, elaborately decorated ofrendas (offerings/altars), traveling mariachi bands, Catrina parades, sugar skulls, folklore costumes, and vibrant marigold blooms help the living and the dead transcend boundaries – at least for a day…

This exhibition is presented alongside the latest works from Amy James, Audra Kohout, and H. E. Roe. All works from these artists are on view, free of charge, during regular gallery hours (12 - 6 p.m., Tue - Sun) from Jul 2 - Aug 1, 2024.
